LEST 40-HOUR BASIC DEFENSIVE TACTICS
INSTRUCTOR
COURSE OUTLINE |
| |
|
Principles
of Adult Learning – A study of adult learning principles as well as
characteristics of a good instructor. This is a compressed instructor
development course geared toward teaching defensive tactics. It also
addresses special issues of teaching such as problem students, smaller or
weaker students, etc. |
| |
|
Legal Basis
for Use of Force - This section covers major court cases, constitutional
issues, Missouri statutes, the objective reasonableness standard,
de-escalation, forcing the issue, public expectation, and much more. This
segment provides the basis for an instructor to explain legal issues to
students and for instructors to continue their research. |
| |
|
Writing Use
of Force Reports – You don’t just talk about the importance of report
writing, you practice writing and edit some sample reports. You’ll learn
common mistakes made by students and get practical suggestions for
conducting your own classes. |
| |
|
Tactical
Aspects of Reasonable Use of Force – This includes a three-dimensional
use of force model unique to this program. It is a great teaching tool
emphasizing de-escalation and proper choice of tactics. You will also learn
Angles of Entry and Angles of Escape - using footwork patterns that are easy
to learn and are the foundation to winning a heated contest. Other concepts
such as verbal commands are also addressed. |
| |
|
CLAMP
Technique Familiarization (Chris Lein Arm Management Program) – This is
a bent arm-bar, the best overall control technique. This works wonders for
smaller or weaker officers. It is easy to learn and easy to apply from any
relative position. |
| |
|
Handcuffing
– This too is based on CLAMP. It is simply and will actually be used by
your officers in the field. It includes hinged and chained cuffs, leg irons,
control takedowns, and a special method for handcuffing people with small
wrists. |
| |
|
Distraction
& Pain Compliant Techniques – These include unique escort tactics,
pressure points, and distraction strikes. |
| |
|
Active
Defensive Measures – We address strikes and kicks under varying
conditions of attack. We emphasize drills and learning techniques to help
students. |
| |
|
OC Spray
Chemical Munitions – We believe it is important to certify instructors
in this basic law enforcement tool. You will learn the basics of how to
safely operate scenarios for your training. |
| |
|
Basic Baton
Training – What do you do after you strike someone with a baton? This
segment includes some simple and easy to learn control and takedown
techniques to handcuffing – essential skills for an instructor. |
| |
|
Weapon
Retention and Disarming - We emphasize drill work to avoid getting in
that tape loop of using one technique when it is not working. You’ll learn
techniques that work for various body types and in different situations. We
practice with handguns and long guns. |
| |
|
Ground
Defenses – You’ll address some basic techniques to avoid a ground
situation and to handle it when you end up on the ground, unable to
disengage. Basic control and escape techniques are taught. Again, drill work
is emphasized to help students learn. |
